Japanese Government Scholarships

  1. Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students
    Offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)
    When to apply: April
    Stipend per month (for one year): ¥50,000 for undergraduate students, ¥70,000 for graduate students
    Eligible students: Students in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate or graduate program
    Number awarded in 2006-07: 8 at the undergraduate level, 5 at the graduate level
     
  2. Japanese Government Scholarship Program for International Students Applying from within Japan
    Administered by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, this program covers tuition fees and pays a stipend.
    When to apply: October
    Stipend per month: ¥126,000 for undergraduate students, ¥160,000 for graduate students
    Eligible students: Fourth-year undergraduates and graduate students
    Number awarded in 2005-06: 1 at the graduate level

Municipal Scholarships

Scholarships offered by municipal governments in almost all cases pay around ¥10,000 a month. You must live in the municipality to be eligible.

Hachioji City Scholarship for International Students
When to apply: June
Stipend per month (for one year): ¥10,000
Eligible students: Undergraduate, graduate, and research students
Number awarded in 2006-07: 1 at the undergraduate level

Foundation Scholarships

  1. Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation, Inc. Scholarship
    Administered by the Rotary Club. Recipients are judged not only for their academic work (the nature of their research) but also on the basis of such factors as their level of cultural understanding.
    When to apply: September
    Stipend per month (for one or two years): ¥100,000 for undergraduate students, ¥140,000 for graduate students
    Eligible students: Undergraduates in third year or above and graduate students
    Number awarded in 2007-08: 1 at the graduate level
     
  2. Heiwa Nakajima Foundation Scholarship
    For students with outstanding academic records.
    When to apply: September
    Stipend per month (for one or two years): ¥100,000 for undergraduate students, ¥120,000 for graduate students
    Eligible students: Undergraduates in third year or above and graduate students
    Number awarded in 2005-06: 1 at the graduate level
     
  3. Kawashima Shoji Memorial Scholarship
    For students with outstanding academic records.
    When to apply: April
    Stipend per month (for one year): ¥100,000
    Eligible students: Undergraduate and graduate students
    Number awarded in 2006-07: 1 at the graduate level

In the past, international students at TAU have won various other scholarships as well. These include the Korean Scholarship Foundation Scholarship and the Kyoritsu Maintenance Scholarship, besides various scholarships available to both international and Japanese students.
