Faculty of Art and Communication Evening Division

TAU established its Evening Division at the Kaminoge campus in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo in 1999. It is one of the three pillars of TAU besides the Faculty of Art and Design at the Hachioji campus and the Graduate Program.

The Evening Division is composed of three major courses: Fine Arts, Design and Moving Images and Performing Arts. The aim of this division is to nurture well-educated people who are able to play an active role in international society. The division prepares students to become artists, designers, and creators in the fields of film and drama and researchers who can contribute to society. It offers instruction in fine art, design, film and video and performing arts with an emphasis on exploring new avenues of communication and expression. The curriculum includes courses in foreign languages and art theory, as well as PBL (Project Based Learning) classes. With its balance of art and culture, the curriculum is designed to develop students' creativity and originality. Moreover, students can make many new acquaintances beyond the walls of their departments and academic years.

The main characteristic of the division is to provide the opportunities for continuing education to middle-aged and elderly people. Therefore, besides general entrance examinations, it conducts special examinations for groups of working and retired people in order for them to demonstrate their capabilities. For working students, classes are open from 6 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. on Saturdays, which enables them to graduate from TAU after four years. In addition, younger students who have entered the university via the general entrance examination are able to study with working students of different ages who possess specialized knowledge and work experience in a variety of fields. We strongly believe that this unique educational environment stimulates younger students in many ways.

The Kaminoge campus, located near the center of Tokyo, features art and design studios, film studio facilities and the latest audio-visual equipment. All studios are available for use by students from 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The division offers an ideal environment in which students make creations in the daytime and study their subjects at night.
