General Education

Producing enlightened members of society through a broad-based education

The General Education program is concerned with all aspects of art and culture and aims to provide students with a broad understanding of cultural and social contexts as well as opportunities for detailed theoretical research into particular areas. In the field of art education, practicing skills and fostering creativity and individual identity are essential factors. Our aim is to balance practical ability, art theory, and general cultural studies such as philosophy, the study of religion, economics, and science. The program works closely with all departments to provide a broad curriculum which answers the needs of various types of student.

The non-specialist syllabus of the program prepares students to become responsible and informed members of society. The program includes foreign language classes in English, Italian, French, German, Korean and Chinese to help students understand foreign cultures and communicate with people around the world. In addition, TAU has a sports ground and well-equipped indoor facilities for physical education activities.

Students are expected to develop their study skills and problem-solving abilities during their four-year university life. To this end, the program provides an extensive range of classes which require the writing of reports and essays, and involve interviewing, compiling information, and summarizing. These classes also develop an awareness of fundamental social issues necessary for active participation in contemporary society.

The General Education program also includes courses in which students can earn the required credits for becoming a teacher or curator.
