Through the specialised study of various aspects of art and civilisation,
the Department of Art Studies aims to research into the cultural achievements
of all periods, from prehistory to present time. Since its establishment
in 1981, the Department has ventured on new fields, beyond the conventional
disciplines, intending to act as a mediator between art and society.
During the last few decades, the world has witnessed a dramatic transition
of cultural values. This development asks for a re-consideration of the
meaning of art and society. Having observed this transition, the Department
successfully remodelled its educational framework. The drastic reforms,
which were undertaken in 2006, resulted in creating an even stronger
faculty and offering a more comprehensive curriculum. The Department
continues to develop into this new direction, while maintaining the fundamental
aims adopted at its foundation.
The essential feature characteristic for the program offered by the
Department of Art Science is its critical approach to the inherent potential
of art, society and human beings based on a thorough comprehension of civilisation.
It also endeavours to research into the art of all ages, in order to
provide meanings and encouragement for future generations.
The Department of Art Science is made up of eight courses, namely Art
and Religion, City and Curatorial, Art and Appreciation, Image and Body,
Language and Nature, Consciousness and Archives, Art and Civilization,
and Art History and Modernity. Moreover, these courses offer four
types of approaches and they help students to develop their fundamental to
profound knowledge and thoughts.
The Department considers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctor
courses as the various stages of publishing a book. The undergraduate
theses are viewed as the introduction, the postgraduate ’s as the
main text, and the doctoral ’s as the final publication. This concept
provides a clear educational framework, offering an effective guidance
to students, as well as illustrating the Department’s consistent idea.
