Alvin Lustig |
Lustig's
jackets were allowed to test the limits of book jacket imagery for New Directions,
for whom he desigened jackets using abstract, art-based images.
Lustig not only created a personality for the New Directions Classics, he advanced the standard of book jacket design through his use of abstract images, often combined with modern typography. The jackets here suggest the influences of painters such as Miro, Picasso, and Rothko.

Paul Rand |

Paul
Rand introduced modern principles to bool jacket design. His work was design,
not illustration. Typography, as opposed to the calligraphy in vogue at the time,
was wed to image, ususally photography. Photograms, collage, and montage were
his media. Even today, the jackets he designed in the 1940s have a timeless quality
because the images he used were not roooted in a style or time period, and the
typography was not novel, but functional.
