The Nihonga (Japanese Painting) division of Tama Art University began as one of the three pillars―the others were Western Painting, and Design & Craft―of the Art and Design Department of the Teikoku Art School. Founded in 1929, it was the predecessor of Tama Teikoku Art School, opened in 1935, weaving a historic thread of 92 years of Nihonga at Tama Art University.
Matazo Kayama was appointed to the university in 1963, and Misao Yokoyama, two years later. These two unique and gifted artists joined forces, infusing their teaching with new concepts not bound by the conventions and traditions of Nihonga that had existed since the Meiji period. Education in Nihonga was based on their ideals, and produced many talented artists. Since then, the spirit of Kayama and Yokoyama has been handed down, and we have cultivated a wide variety of artists by respecting various forms of expression that originated in the Nihonga tradition.
In this exhibition, Matazo Kayama and Misao Yokoyama are regarded as the standard-bearers of "contemporary Nihonga" and positioned as originators of the revival of Nihonga education at the university. Thus, by exhibiting the works of 89 artists, we bear witness to how students under the tutelage of Kayama and Yokoyama passed on their ideals to the following generations up to the present day, brought together for your enjoyment in this exhibition.
