ArtCenter College of Design,■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■A Perfect Opportunity to DeepenUnderstanding of Other CulturesThe project alternates between the two countries each year, so it is one of the university’s study abroad programs. Students conduct joint research as residents of that country for three or four months. In a normal year, around 20 undergraduate and graduate students partici-pate following a selection process involving both schools. There are also special in-profit programs, theme-linked lectures, and optional language training. For students of Tama Art University hoping to work overseas, the project provides an excellent opportunity to deepen understanding of other cultures, improve English language proficiency, and enhance communication skills for a more international outlook.Whether in America or Japan, ArtCenter instructors serve as the main teachers, and lectures are all in English. The lectures take up soci-etal issues from disaster preparedness and environmental challenges to demographic aging, as well as everyday subjects like food culture and traditional crafts. Research is conducted in groups on how to help solve these problems through the power of art and design, with participants going on research excursions and holding many discussions before presenting their findings in the form of creative works.A number of student projects created during Pacific Rim have won awards at global competitions like the International Design Excellence Awards and iF Design Awards.Maintaining ConnectionDuring a Global PandemicIn 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pacific Rim was canceled for only the second time in its history (the first was in 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake). Located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design offers 11 undergraduate and seven graduate degrees covering a range of industri-al design fields, including Graphic Design, Illustration, Product Design, Spatial Experience Design, and Transportation Design. The college has produced numerous graduates who have gone on to fame in their respec-tive fields. Established by an advertising executive in 1930, ArtCenter enrolls 2,022 students from over 40 countries (as of December 2021). Exchange with Tama Art University began in 1981, and it gave rise to the Pacific Rim Project. These two universities located on the Pacific Rim wanted to give students the opportunity to pursue and promote new possibilities in design while deepening the ties between them. The project had been in place for so many years, there was a strong desire among everyone involved to remain connected, so instructors at both schools decided to take the project online. A three-day program was held online in October 2021 to explore the fusion of light and nature from the standpoint of natural phenomena and biomimetics. The students worked in small, mixed teams as usual and communi-cated while overcoming the physical distance and 17-hour time differ-ence between countries.Local reconstruction and the pursuit of design possibilitiesin Tohoku after the Great East Japan EarthquakeThinking about sustainability and the role of designin Chang Mai, ThailandVisual for Pacific Rim2021's themeBeyondthe GlobalStandard
