One is Prof. Apichatpong Weerasethakul, one of Thailand’s leading film directors and winner of numerous awards, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The other is Prof. Chiharu Shiota, a globally active artist based in Berlin, Germany who caused a sensation with her solo show The Soul Trembles when it was held at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi, Tokyo in 2019.“Interacting directly with highly distinguished artists active on the global stage will be an invaluable experience for our students. So this is at once a modest and a highly ambitious start for EWS,” EWS Director and University President Akira Tatehata remarked upon EWS’s launch.Prof. Akihiro Kubota of the Art and Media Course was appointed EWS Chief Professor. He works with Assistant Prof. Suzanne Mooney (PhD, Tama Art University, 2014) to administer EWS and provide pro-duction and language support for graduate students.Open to Students in All DisciplinesUndergraduates May AuditEWS consists of intensive workshops (of approx. two weeks) with spe-cially appointed professors, a lecture series with university and outside guest professors, and open seminars with Prof. Kubota and Asst. Prof. Mooney. The open seminars, which meet once a week, and the lecture series, which meets around eight times a year, provide background information on the careers and accomplishments of Prof. Apichatpong and Prof. Shiota and deepen students’ understanding of their works. This is intended to prepare the students for active participation in the intensive workshops.EWS classes are open to graduate students in all disciplines and may be audited by non-enrolled graduate students and undergraduates. The graduate school has full curriculums with individual character-istics for each course of study just like the undergraduate school, and it has been highly successful with this approach. EWS is a new attempt to further develop this approach to go beyond individual departments and disciplines on an ongoing, international basis.Beyondthe GlobalStandard
