Introduction
Textiles are handmade, household staples that have long enveloped and nurtured peoples’ minds, bodies and lives. Ethnicities across the globe have each created their own textile cultures through the fabric material and technology rooted in the essence of their respective local areas. Textiles are the common thread that connects people throughout the world.
Textiles are not limited to everyday clothing and living spaces, but are also used in everything from vehicle interiors to space development, industrial and medical materials. And the possibilities are only growing. Textiles cover a broad range of industries and clearly reflect aspects of society, fashion, artistic culture and the economy. In fact, Japan is one of the rare countries in the world in which both the culture of traditional dyeing and weaving by hand and advanced textile technology coexist.
The goal of the Textile Design Major in the Production Design Department is to train leading designers and artists to specialize in textile-related design and artistic expression.
The program begins with a foundation in learning the origins and handling of materials, techniques and creative expression, later focusing on elements such as the physical functions of fabrics, the decorative role of patterns, and the power of colors, and additionally offering practical experience on everything from mastering handmade dying and weaving techniques to expression making full use of digital technology. At the same time, students consider the role of textiles from various viewpoints in society and learn firsthand through cooperative projects with industries, governments, academia and the international community. Moreover, while deepening the students’ awareness of environmental issues, these courses foster the ability to think about and create the future.
This program offers students practical English language education, foreign exchange, and international exchange projects in order to cultivate highly intelligent and inspired people who can be immediately integrated into the international community. The aim of these courses is to train leaders responsible for a new generation of textile creation in order for them to conduct research in the humanities such as fashion culture, ethnic studies, and conservation and restoration of textiles, inherit and protect cultural heritage and traditional textile techniques, and promote local industries. In this broad sense, the goal is to support society’s textiles everywhere they are found and continuously produce professionals who can contribute to their development and advancement.
